Job Summary
The GIS Intern assists in implementing and maintaining Geographical Information Systems (GIS). This position also assists with responding to the high demand for GIS by assisting the public, municipalities and other departments with data requests and analysis.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
The following duties are primarily performed and are essential for this position. Employees are expected to be able to perform each of these job duties satisfactorily and successfully with or without reasonable accommodations to be qualified for the position. Other duties may be required and assigned. General Mapping:
Assist GIS Coordinator with maintaining numerous data layers, while running QA/QC for errors. Interpret legal descriptions and map using coordinate geometry. Updates site addresses in the tax assessment roll (Ascent). Create maps for other departments, municipalities and the public as requested.
NG911 Standards for Address and Centerlines:
Verify and map municipal assigned address points and centerlines. Supply sheriff's department with new road centerlines and site address lat/long coordinates. Maintain Law/Fire/EMS polygon boundaries. Assist in maintaining required geodatabases for law enforcement, tax assessment roll and GIS website.
Geodatabase and Application Development:
Help to create and/or modify geodatabases and online applications for the Land Information Office or requested by other departments, municipalities, or others. Assist with maintaining Geo-HUB site's content of apps, pdf maps and story maps.
Data Requests:
Provide digital data, online applications and hard copy or digital maps as requested, some on a regular schedule. Assist in coordinating with other counties or agencies to acquire or extract data. Assist other departments with drafting legal description or other GIS needs.
Plat of Surveys:
Sort, map, scan. index and file all new plat of surveys for GIS website
Administrative:
Assist GIS Coordinator with duties of the office, including: provide input for 3-yr. Land Information Plan projects, occasional ArcSDE administration to publish data updates to public GIS website, monitor GIS website functionality, meetings as needed, compile information for reports, compile data for Act 20 requirements, provide monthly GIS updates to oversite committee, assist in public requests, process invoices.

Minimum Education Qualifications
Education and/or Experience Requirements:
- High School Education (or Equivalent).
- Currently working towards Bachelor's or Master's degree in Geography, GIS, or other closely related field, preferred.
- 2-3 years' experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and integrated GPS principles, Land Records, Public Land Survey System (PLSS), ESRI software, preferred.
Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements:
- Wisconsin Driver's License Required
Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Qualifications
In order to perform the functions and responsibilities of the position (listed above) the following knowledge, skills, and abilities are essential. - Working knowledge of GIS, spatial databases and computer graphics and mapping.
- Working knowledge of a wide variety of land information and land use planning.
- Working knowledge of entities utilizing land information and their requirements.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Ability to analyze complex data, evaluate data and systems, make recommendations and implementation.
- Knowledge of mathematical concepts such as geometry, trigonometry, and statistical inference.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing new system proposals.
- Required to have basic computer networking principles, communication, and organizational skills.
