East West Players (EWP) is the nation’s longest-running Asian American theater and the largest producer of Asian American theatrical works. Founded in 1965, EWP is committed to raising the visibility of the Asian American experience by presenting inventive world-class theatrical productions, developing artists of color, and providing impactful youth education programs. Our vision is to inspire and advocate for a world free of racism and discrimination through transformative artistic works.
Position Summary:
The Director of Marketing and Communications is a visionary and self-driven leader responsible for driving East West Players’ visibility, audience engagement, and revenue generation. Reporting to the Managing Director, this individual will take initiative, operate autonomously, and set the direction for the organization’s public brand and communications. They will lead external communications, shape the organization’s image, and ensure that marketing strategies align with EWP’s mission to promote social justice, equity, and the Asian Pacific American experience. This role requires a results-oriented professional with live event experience and a track record of generating ticket sales and building a compelling brand.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership:
● Develop and implement comprehensive marketing and communications strategies that enhance EWP’s brand and increase visibility.
● Take ownership of public-facing communications and branding, ensuring all messaging reflects EWP’s mission and vision.
● Collaborate with the Artistic Director to communicate the theater’s artistic vision, both as an institution and through productions and events.
● Collaborate with the Development Department to create cohesive campaigns that drive donations and align with fundraising goals.
● Lead cross-departmental efforts to ensure all external communications support EWP’s artistic and community engagement objectives.
● Work strategically with the Arts Education department to promote the Theatre For Youth Tour, EWP Play!, and Professional Development Classes. Collaborate on marketing efforts to advertise and fill classes, ensuring alignment with the department’s goals.
● Collaborate with EWP’s external public relations firm to maintain a cohesive press strategy.
Marketing and Revenue Generation:
● Drive ticket sales and achieve revenue goals for all EWP productions and events.
● Develop and execute targeted marketing campaigns utilizing digital, print, and social media platforms.
● Plan, place, and manage advertising campaigns across various media channels, ensuring the effective use of a $100k budget to generate over $400k in ticket sales annually.
● Analyze sales data, audience feedback, and market trends to refine strategies and forecast ticket goals.
● Identify and engage with new audiences while cultivating relationships with existing patrons.
Communications and Branding:
● Oversee all external communications, including press releases, newsletters, marketing videos, social media, and website content, ensuring consistent branding and messaging.
● Build and maintain relationships with media outlets and community partners to amplify EWP’s presence.
● Create and oversee the creation and publication of production playbills and event programs in collaboration with the EWP staff, so that they include the needs of all departments and show companies.
● Serve as a spokesperson when needed and develop and manage public statements and crisis communications
● Create and manage an organizational style guide and oversee copy editing and proofreading across marketing assets.
Team Leadership:
● Supervise and mentor the Marketing and Communications team, including staff and contractors, fostering a collaborative and creative environment.
● Lead by example, encouraging innovation, accountability, and initiative within the team.
● Partner with other departments to ensure alignment of organizational goals and messaging.
Community Engagement:
● Strengthen EWP’s connection to the Little Tokyo community and establish partnerships with theaters across Los Angeles and nationally.
● Advocate for the representation of the Asian Pacific American experience in the performing arts.
Qualifications:
● Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in Marketing, Communications, or a related field; advanced degree or experience preferred.
● Minimum of 5+ years of experience in live event marketing, with a proven ability to meet and exceed ticket sales goals.
● Proven experience in planning and executing advertising campaigns to achieve significant revenue targets.
● Exceptional strategic thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
● Demonstrated ability to lead projects independently and take initiative without waiting for direction.
● Experience in community engagement and fostering partnerships.
● Strong leadership and team management abilities.
● Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
● Proficiency with digital marketing tools, analytics platforms, and CRM systems.
Preferred Skills:
● Knowledge of Asian Pacific American history and cultural issues.
● Connection to the Asian American-Pacific Islander-Native Hawaiian community and experience
● Experience working in the arts or non-profit sectors.
● Familiarity with emerging technologies such as VR or live-streaming for audience engagement.
Compensation:
$70,000 to $80,000 annually, commensurate with experience, along with a benefits package including healthcare, vision, dental, and pet insurance, and 403(b)
